Norman is a Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine as well as the Division of Anesthesiology and Critical Care at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. Dr. Norman has extensive experience with both oncology and anesthesiology, including thoracic anesthesia, pharmacology control, and cancer outcome studies. Dr. Norman is noted as an authority on the subject in the United States and Canada, and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada. In 2000, Dr. Norman has also received a Golden Apple Award for teaching at Baylor. In 1977, Dr. Norman received his medical degree at the University of Toronto, Faculty of Medicine. He completed his internship at St. Joseph’s Health Center, and his anesthesiology residency with various Toronto Hospitals. He then completed a clinical fellowship in thoracic and vascular medicine with Toronto General Hospital. Dr. Norman is co-author of over 20 articles involving anesthetic treatments. She is particularly interested in following and creating algorithms for consistent patient evaluation, the use of risk calculators for early identification of the high risk patient and the use of interventions early in the surgical patient pathway for health optimization on day of surgery. Other research interests include identification of patient and surgical risk factors for postoperative respiratory failure after robotic surgery, and identification of risk factors for hyperkalemia in surgical trauma patients requiring massive transfusion.
