Trends in Artificial Intelligence

Dr. Xiaowei Xu is a professor in the Department of Information Science at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR). Prior to his appointment at UALR, he was a senior research scientist and the head of a research team in data mining at Siemens Corporate Research and Technologies. Dr. Xu is adjunct professor in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Arkansas. Dr. Xu was an Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) Faculty Research Program Member in the National Center for Toxicological Research's (NCTR) Center for Bioinformatics in the Division of Systems Biology from 2010 to 2014. He is also a consultant for companies including Siemens, Acxiom, Dataminr and Neusoft. Dr. Xu's research focuses on novel algorithms for datamining and machine learning, parallel and distributed algorithms, information retrieval, and bioinformatics. He published over 70 papers in peer reviewed journals and conference proceedings. Dr. Xu is a recipient of the prestigious ACM SIGKDD Test of Time Award for his pioneered work in density-based on clustering algorithm (DBSCAN), which has received over 6,673 citations based on Google Scholar and is also one of the most common clustering algorithms according to Wikipedia.

Dr. Ernest Greene is a Professor of Psychology, University of Southern California, USA. He received his doctorate in Psychology from the University of Oregon, specializing in behavioral neuroscience. He did a postdoctoral fellowship at the Brain Research Institute at UCLA before joining the faculty of the Psychology Department at the University of Southern California. The is an Elected Fellow of the National Academy of Neuropsychology, a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and a Fellow of the Psychonomic Society and three Divisions of the American Psychological Association. His current research uses psychophysics methodology to study shape and pattern recognition. He has two patents on shape and pattern encoding for machine vision, and is especially interested in neuromorphic modeling of retinal mechanisms.

Dr. Fleur T. Tehrani is a Professor of Electrical Engineering at California State University, Fullerton, USA. She holds a B.S. degree in electrical engineering from Sharif University of Technology, Tehran, Iran; a graduate diploma from Imperial College of Science and Technology, London, UK; and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from University of London, London, UK. Dr. Tehrani has published many articles in the field of biomedical engineering. She is the inventor of metabolic rate monitors and several respiratory assist devices including an advanced respiratory control system known as Adaptive Support Ventilation. Two of her issued patents have been commercialized and are used in practice worldwide. She has been a reviewer of a number of books and many scientific journals and has served as an Invited Panelist for several US research funding institutions including the National Institute of Health and the National Science Foundation. She has received two NASA Fellowships and a number of awards at the local and national levels for her research contributions. Dr. Tehrani is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (the IET), a Fellow of the Institute for the Advancement of Engineering, a National Life Member of Graduate Women in Science (GWIS), and she has been a subject of biographical records in several of the Marquis Who’s Who publications.

Anthony Chang is a pediatric cardiologist and Chief Intelligence and Innovation Officer at CHOC Children’s Orange County. He is currently getting his Masters in Bioinformatics/Artificial Intelligence at Stanford, and he is the founder and medical director of the nascent Medical Intelligence and Innovation Institute (MI3) that is supported by the Sharon Disney Lund Foundation. The institute is dedicated to implement data science and artificial intelligence in medicine and is the first institute of its kind in a hospital. Dr. Chang attended Johns Hopkins University for his B.A. in molecular biology prior to entering Georgetown University School of Medicine for his M.D. He then completed his pediatric residency at Children’s Hospital National Medical Center and his pediatric cardiology fellowship at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Dr. Chang has been the medical director of several pediatric cardiac intensive care programs (including Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles, Miami Children’s Hospital, and Texas Children’s Hospital). He is the founder of the Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Society (PCICS) and the founder of the Asia-Pacific Pediatric Cardiac Society (APPCS). In 2013 Dr. Chang has started a pediatric innovation leadership group whose bi-annual symposium Pediatrics2040: Emerging Trends and Future Innovations became a catalyst for the international Society for Pediatric Innovation (iSPI).

Dr. Yiannis Papadopoulos is Professor of Computer Science and leader of the Dependable Systems Group in the University of Hull. He has studied Engineering and Computer Science in the Aristotelian University in Thessaloniki and the University of Cranfield and holds a PhD in Computer Science from the University of York. Over the last 15 years Professor Papadopoulos has pioneered a body of work on model-based dependability assessment and evolutionary optimisation of complex engineering systems known as Hierarchically Performed Hazard Origin and Propagation Studies (HiP-HOPS). He has also co-authored EAST-ADL, an emerging architecture description language developed as standard by the automotive industry. These technologies have gained wide academic recognition and have been successfully transferred to the automotive, shipping and other industries, where they have been commercialised and successfully deployed in design and engineering processes. Prof. Papadopoulos is actively involved in two technical committees of the International Federation of Automatic Control IFAC on design and control of distributed dependable systems, and has co-founded in 2007 the IFAC Conference on Dependable Control of Discrete Systems (DCDS) which provides the key event on “dependability research” within IFAC. He has co-chaired the 4th edition of DCDS that took place at the University of York in September 2013. Prof. Papadopoulos is presently developing a new strand of research that intersects computer science, philosophy, medicine and art with potentially novel applications and impact on conceptual art, art therapy and educational games.

Dr. Massimo Buscema is the Founder and Director of Semeion -Research Centre of Science and Communication in Rome, Italy. He is the Co-founder and Member of the Advisory Board of the Center for Computational and Mathematical Biology (CCMB) The CCMB is a center of the University of Denver, Colorado, USA. He worked as Professor Adjoint at the Department of Mathematics and Statistics of the University of Colorado, Denver and also as Professor and Director of the Department of Science of Communications at the University of Charleston. He also worked as Director and Dean protempore of the Department of Science of Communications of the American College of Rome University of Charleston, West Virginia, USA. Dr. Buscema is Creator and programmer of the software ver.1.5. Metrics Machine, Auto Contractive Maps Software Composition with Hyper-CM HC ver.1.0, Metanet Multi-Train v.1.0, ACM Fusion v. 3.5. etc.

Dr. Vassilis S Kodogiannis is Reader in Computational Intelligence in the Faculty of Science and Technology, at the University of Westminster, London, United Kingdom. He received his Diploma in Electrical Engineering (1990) from Democritus University of Thrace, Greece and the MSc in VLSI Systems Engineering (1991) from UMIST, UK. His PhD in Electrical Engineering from Liverpool University (1994) was earned for his research work on intelligent control to underwater robotic vehicles. From 1996-1999 he has been with Technical University of Crete and University of Ioannina, Greece and subsequently joined University of Westminster in 1999. He has participated in a number European research projects and is co-inventor for two international patents on wireless capsule endoscopy. His research interests concentrate on the area of Computational Intelligent Systems. He has a well-defined research profile focused on areas such as Intelligent Systems, Modelling & Control, Signal & Image Processing, Machine Learning, Data Mining and Chemometrics. His latest research is related to the development of intelligent decision support systems in Food Microbiology (Food Safety).

Dr. Ricardo Vilalta is associate professor in the Department of computer science at the University of Houston. Prior to that he worked as a researcher at IBM TJ Watson Research Center in NY. He holds MS and Ph.D. degrees in computer science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He worked as Visiting Professor in Center for Research And Advanced Studies at Guadalajara,Mexico. His research interests are in machine learning, statistical learning theory, data mining, artificial intelligence and astroinformatics. He is recipient of a Fulbright scholarship (1991-97), the Invention Achievement Award from IBM T.J. Watson Research Center (2001), Best Paper Award at the European Conference on Machine Learning (2003) and the CAREER Award from National Science Foundation (2005). Dr. Vilalta has worked on several projects in astroinformatics including the analysis of landforms over the surface of Mars, and the classification of variable stars and supernovae using domain adaptation techniques.

Dr. Zhishun Wang is working as Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons and also as a Research Scientist V in the New York State Psychiatric Institute. Dr. Wang is also the Director of fMRI research group in the MRI research lab, mentoring and training research assistants and postdoctoral fellows to perform fMRI data analyses in Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Columbia University and New York State Psychiatric Institute. He completed MS in Image Processing from Nanjing University of Posts & Telecomm and PhD in Biomedical Signal & Image Processing from Southeast University, Nanjing, China. Dr. Wang then worked as Research Associate in electrophysiology on EEG/EMG/EGG/ECG at Lynn Institutefor Healthcare Research in Oklahoma City, USA. He also worked as Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons. Dr. Wang's research interests include Artificial neural networks, machine learning, deep learning, chaos and fractals, human cognitive neural networks, brain imaging, magnetic resonance imaging.

Dr. Victor S. Sheng is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at the University of Central Arkansas, and the Founding Director of Data Analytics Laboratory. Prior to that he was an Associate Research Scientist and NSERC Post-Doctoral Fellow in information systems at Stern Business School of New York University in New York. His current research interests include data mining, machine learning, and related applications. Dr. Sheng is a senior member of the IEEE and the IEEE Computer Society, and a Lifetime Member of ACM. He was the recipient of the Best Paper Award Runner-Up from KDD'08, the Best Paper Award from ICDM'11, and the Best Student Paper Award Finalist from WISE'15.

Dr. Haddad holds the position of Director of Software Architecture at SlipChip, Inc. She is responsible for the design and development of software, bioinformatics,and analytics tools and infrastructure for SlipChip’s medical diagnostic products. Prior to that, Mojgan was the Senior Director of Analytics at HealthTell from 2014 to 2015. She served in various roles at Monogram Biosciences, a LabCorp company, including Director of Bioinformatics and Biostatistics, and Director of Software Engineering, from 2000 to 2013. Mojgan received her PhD in Computer Science, and her Masters in Computer Science/Artificial Intelligence from Vienna University of Technology in Austria. She performed her postdoctoral study at UCSF in the area of Mathematical and Computational Biology. Dr. Haddad serves as an editor for a few journals, and has published extensively in the area of data science for virology, oncology, and personalized medicine. In 1996, she received the European young scientist award for her work in the area of nuclear medicine.

Dr. Sharad Shandilya is the Director, Science and Technology of Global Health and Education Inc., San Francisco Bay Area, United States of America. He obtained Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in Computer Science from Virginia Commonwealth University. He was Kirschstein Fellow in Bioinformatics from University of Michigan. He then started working as Manager in Clinical Data at Ettrick Health and Research Center, Petersburg VA. He worked as Research Associate and Research Specialist in Department of Computer Science at Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond. Dr. Shandilya also worked as Senior Product Manager in Algorithms and Analytics at BidStream and Director of Research and Analytics in Omnicom Group, NY. Dr. Shandilya's Research interests include Machine Learning, Statistics, Data Mining, Pattern Recognition, Time-Series, Predictive Modeling, Optimization, Nonlinear Methods, Biomedical Signal Processing, Adaptive Systems/Algorithms, Decision Support, Big Data Solutions, Technical/Quantitative Product Development.

Dr. Benjamin W Y Lo is the first Canadian neurosurgeon with ICU specialist qualification as well as clinical epidemiology and biostatistics training at both the master's and doctoral levels. Benjamin received subspecialty training in neurosurgery and critical care medicine at the University of Toronto, McMaster University and Queen's University. Currently, he works as a cerebrovascular neurosurgeon and ICU specialist at Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital, McGill University. He has an active clinical and academic exchange in neurovascular surgery and critical care medicine with University of Hong Kong, Tokyo Women's Medical University, Kyoto University and Nagoya University. He enjoys teaching trainees at all levels in critical care medicine and neurosurgery. Related to his clinical interests, Benjamin's research program focuses on characterization of brain-body interactions in neurovascular critical care patients. Among his publications, his book entitled "Brain-Body Interactions: Contemporary Outcome Prediction in Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage using Bayesian Neural Networks and Fuzzy Logic" was published in Summer 2014. In addition to English, French and Chinese, he has also taken up Japanese language.

Jianhua Zhang is a Professor in School of Control and Computer Engineering at North China Electric Power University in Beijing, China. She received her Ph. D from Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics in 1996. She worked as Visiting Professor in The University of Manchester and Queen’s University Belfast of United Kingdom. She is a Member of State Key Laboratory of Alternate Electrical Power System with Renewable Energy Sources. Her research interests are in the areas of artificial intelligence, machine learning,stochastic control, networked control systems, fault diagnosis and process control, Energy conversion and control.

Prof. Yuguo Yu obtained his B.S. degree (1995) in Physics from Lanzhou University, and Ph.D (2001) in biophysics at Nanjing University. He was trained in Computational/Behavior Neuroscience at Carnegie Mellon University as a Postdoctoral Fellow from 2001 to 2004 and Associate Research Scientist at Department of Neuroscience at Yale University from 2005-2011. In July 2011, He became a full professor in the Center for Computational Systems Biology at Fudan University. He was a recipient of the Shanghai Eastern Scholar Professorship (2013). His research interests include cellular mechanisms of cortical spiking dynamics and information processing, synaptic mechanism of learning and memory formation, energetics of neuronal signaling and information encoding, large scale of cortical network modeling.

Dr. Chien-Ho Ko is currently a full Professor in the Civil Engineering Department at National Pingtung University of Science and Technology, Taiwan. He was formerly a faculty member in the Industrial Engineering and Technology Management Department at Da-Yeh University. Prior to this profession, Prof. Ko conducted his postdoctoral research at the University of California at Berkeley, USA, on the government funds of Ministry of Education. He is a registered professional engineer of fire protection. His research encompasses around project production management, lean construction, robotics, artificial intelligence, and fire protection. Prof. Ko is serving as an Editor-in-Chief in the Journal of Engineering, Project, and Production Management (EPPM-Journal), the President of Taiwan Lean Construction Institute, and , the President of Taiwan Industrial Robot Association. Prof. Ko’s Research interests include Project management, lean construction, robotics, artificial intelligence.

Dr. Feiping Nie is a Professor at Northwestern Polytechnical University, China and received the Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from Tsinghua University, China in 2009. His research interests are machine learning and its applications, such as pattern recognition, data mining, computer vision, image processing and information retrieval. He has published more than 100 papers in the following top journals and conferences: TPAMI, IJCV, TIP, TNNLS/TNN, TKDE, TKDD, Bioinformatics, ICML, NIPS, KDD, IJCAI, AAAI, ICCV, CVPR. His papers have been cited more than 5000 times (Google scholar). He is now serving as Associate Editor or PC member for several prestigious journals and conferences in the related fields.

Dr.Qing Li is a Professor and an Associate dean of Economic Information Engineering School at Southwestern University of Finance and Economics, China. He is also an adjunct professor of University of Arizona. He received his M.S. and B.S. degrees from Harbin Engineering University, China and Ph.D. from Kumoh National Institute of Technology. He worked as a post-doctoral Researcher with Arizona State University and Information and Communications University of Korea separately. Li's research interests lie primarily in artificial intelligent, data science and business intelligence. He served in the program chairs and committees of various international conferences including PACIS, ICMeCG, SIGIR, CIKM and AIRS. He was a recipient of several talent programs including New Century Excellent Talents in University of China by the Ministry of Education, and 100-Talents in Sichuan Province of China.

Dr. Zhaohong Deng is a Professor in Department of Digital Media Technology, School of Digital Media, Jiangnan University, China. He was an Associate professor in Jiangnan University. He received his Ph.D in 2008 Artificial Intelligence, Jiangnan University, China Research interests: Fuzzy logic systems, fuzzy neural networks, fuzzy clustering, fuzzy transfer learning and their applications.

Dr. Hongliang Cao is an Associate Professor in College of Engineering, China. Since 2012, he has been a Lecturer in the College of Engineering, Huazhong Agricultural University, Wuhan, China, where he has been an Associate Professor in 2015. His research interests in the areas of artificial intelligence, machine learning, modeling and control of complicated and nonlinear systems, data mining for the thermochemistry conversion process of biomass, high value utilization and innocent treatment of agricultural wastes. The research interest of Dr. Cao's group is mainly to treat agricultural wastes (e.g., manure, straw) by thermochemical conversion technology, and he is the director of the group. During the conversion process, it is greatly important to monitor and predict the process information. Data mining method based on artificial intelligence is a promising alternative. Dr. Cao's research interests include intelligence modeling and optimization, and machine learning. He has completed some important and recognized works in the field of artificial intelligence and its application.
