Dr. Nigel Yarlett is a Distinguished Professor of Biochemistry and Director of Haskins Laboratories at Pace University, New York, United States of America. He recevied his BS and PhD from Cardiff University, Wales. Did post doctoral research at The Rockefeller University, New York, and The Institute of Animal Physiology, Cambridge University. Awarded the Hutner Prize in Protozoology (1995); Fellow of the Society of Fellows of Pace University (1996); a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (2012). Member of the American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and The New York Academy of Science. Over 100 publications in the area of protozoan biochemistry. Demonstrated the presence of hydrogenosomes in Rumen protozoa and Rumen fungi. The role of oxygen in the resistance of Trichomonas vaginalis to metronidazole. The unique polyamine bichemistry of Trichomonas vaginalis and Cryptosporidium parvum. The ability of oxoboroles to cure mouse model trypanosomiasis. Novel culture method for Cryptosporidium parvum. Funded by the National Institutes of Health; Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Current research centers on use of a hollow fiber culture system to evaluate chemotherapeutic agents for the treatment of cryptosporidosis. Compounds can be evaluated over several days or weeks of exposure and preliminary pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic data determined simultaneously. The system permits determination of surviving populations that can be examined for potential drug resistance mechanisms.
