Dr. Akwasi A. Boateng is the Lead Scientist of the thermochemical biomass conversion program at the Agricultural Research Service (ARS), the principal research arm of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). He leads the research on catalytic and non-catalytic pyrolysis for the production of fungible transportation fuels from agricultural residues and energy crops. Dr. Boateng is also the co-leader of the ARS biochar initiative. Both research activities are national priority efforts in the agency's critical mission of meeting America's fuel independence and solving the global environmental sustainability issues. Prior to joining ARS in 2003 Dr. Boateng held engineering faculty positions at 2 universities followed by a 10-year tenure in the high-temperature mineral/materials processing industry where he held various positions in process/product development rising to chief process engineer. Dr. Boateng received his PhD from the University of British Columbia; he is a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and a senior member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. He has authored about 120 publications over 100 of which are peer-reviewed including 5 patents. His research interests include biofuels, biochar, biomass including energy crops and its conversion, renewable energy and climate change pertaining to the nexus of food, energy and water.
