Dr. Alan McGowan, former Associate Professor of Integrated Science at Eugene Lang College The New School for Liberal Arts, served as chair of the Science, Technology and Society program for four years, and following that, was the chair of the Environmental Studies Program for three. He is now a lecturer in the program. Prior to coming to The New School, he founded and was President of the Gene Media Forum, a non-profit organization that focused on providing information on the social, ethical and scientific aspects of the genetic revolution to journalists. Previously, he was for twenty years the president of the Scientists’ Institute for Public Information, a major bridge between the scientific community and the media.He is chair emeritus of Student Pugwash USA, an organization devoted to the consideration of ethical issues in scientific and technical research. He was a pioneer in environmental education, sharing leadership of an EE program in the late 1960s. He has written extensively on science policy and public understanding of science issues. Dr. McGowan's research interests focus on the intersection between science and technology and social issues, including ethics, politics, and the economy.
