Tarja Malm holds Associate Professorship (tenure track) at the University of Eastern Finland and is the vice director of the Department of Neurobiology at the A.I.Virtanen Institute. She leads the Neuroinflammation research group with the focus to understand inflammatory cell functions, especially those of microglia and astrocytes and mechanisms and mediators of inflammatory reactions in neurodegenerative diseases, especially Alzheimer’s disease and stroke. She received her PhD at the University of Kuopio on 2006 and carried out her postdoctoral period in Prof. Gary Landreth’s lab at the Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, USA. Currently the Neuroinflammation research group led by Dr. Malm aims to identify disease specific mechanisms of microglial regulation, but also common mechanisms of neuroinflammation and the impact of co-morbidites entailing peripheral inflammation on brain microglial functions.
