Dr. David Thomas is a Professor of Therapeutic Recreation and Gerontology within the School of Health Sciences, Eastern Michigan University. Dr. Thomas has over 10 years of clinical experiences within the Veteran Affairs Medical Center system and has served as a Director of a Dementia Care Unit. He is widely consulted in the area of dementia care and has extensive experience in the environmental design and therapeutic interventions used on special care units. Dr. Thomas has given numerous professional presentations on the subject of non-pharmaceutical interventions for dementia and is published in the area of wandering, effects of special care units, and international perspectives on dementia care. Dr. Thomas has previously served on the faculty at the University of South Alabama and Slippery Rock University (PA). Research Interests-Primary research interest in the area of dementia care including measuring the effect of nonpharmaceutical activity interventions for improved behavioral performance with an emphasis on studying the phenomenon of wandering behavior. Environmental and programmatic considerations for the design of special dementia-care units.
