NSAIDs, Dehydration and Acute Kidney Failure in the Young Adults: An Unrecognized Entity?

Authors: Cecilia Czerlau, MD, Daniel Sidler, MD, PhD and Bruno Vogt, MD

Abstract: Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are among the most widely used drug classes worldwide. As a side effect of the therapy can occur an acute interstitial nephritis (AIN) or an acute tubular necrosis (ATN). In acute kidney injury, a major challenge is to distinguish between underlying etiologies. For instance, there are no disease-specific therapies for acute tubular necrosis, whereas acute interstitial nephritis requires immunosuppressive therapy.

Authors: Toru Sanai, MD, PhD, Tomoaki Onoue, MD, Takashi Ono, MD, PhD, Masaharu Nagata, MD, PhD, Yasuko Nakamura, Mikako Iida and Toma Fukumitsu, MD, PhD

Abstract: The prevalence of malnutrition especially of essential amino acid (EAA) is a significant concern in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and hemodialysis (HD) patients. The present study evaluates the efficacy of Amiyu® Granule (AG), a pharmaceutically manufactured oral EAA and histidine supplement, in the improvement of the nutritional indices of the ESRD and HD elderly patients (> 80-year-old).
