Authors: Amila Oshan Silva, MD, PhD

Abstract: Elevated serum cholesterol is a significant risk factor for morbidity and mortality. The main approach to reduce cholesterol is the use of statin drugs. The current study tested the use of a novel food-based technique to reduce cholesterol - the combination of red yeast rice extract (RYRE), extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) and oatmeal. The study was a non-randomized prospective intervention that enrolled 86 patients with elevated total and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C).
