Integrated Geophysical Investigation for Mapping Groundwater Potential Zones of the Mersa-Girana Sub Basin, North Wollo Zone, Ethiopia

Authors: Mehari Sisay, Mebatseyon Shawl and Behailu Birhanu

Abstract: This study was conducted in the Mersa-Girana sub basin in north wollo zone, Ethiopia. It aims to map the groundwater potential zones in the area. VES and magnetic geophysical methods were employed to achieve this objective. As part of the geophysical survey, 293 magnetic data were collected at 100 meter intervals along east-west profiles and 10 VES points were acquired along four east-west profiles with an interval of 500 meter between the VES points.

Application of Thorium Normalization Technique to the Airborne Radiometric Data of Some Parts of the Central Benue Trough (CBT) Nigeria, for Possible Hydrocarbon Accumulation

Authors: Ejike K. Nnaemeka, Gabriel N. Egwuonwu and Izuchukwu I. Obiadi

Abstract: A new hydrocarbon exploratory technique namely; Thorium Normalization is applied on the aero geophysical data (radiometric) of some parts of the central Benue Trough to delineate areas of possible hydrocarbon accumulation. This technique is considered very significant because, it identifies areas with probable hydrocarbon presence in sedimentary basins. Separation of radioelement measurements and estimation of the characteristics statistics over each lithological units were determined. The statistical process carried out on the radioactive elements of thorium, potassium and uranium (eTh, %K and eU) of the area displayed low coefficient of variability (CV%) for the three radioelements, depicting higher degree of homogeneity. The delineation of radioactive anomalies (DRAD), showed results ranging from -0.94 to 5.72% while the potassium relative deviation (KD) obtained values ranging from 0.84 to -5.60%.

Application of Integrated Geophysical Techniques to Map Groundwater Potential Zones and Geological Structures at Borumeda, South Wollo Zone, North Ethiopia

Authors: Eyayu Ayalew Dessalew

Abstract: In this study to identify groundwater potential zones and geological structures, an integrated geophysical investigation utilizing magnetic and vertical electrical sounding approaches was carried out at BoruMeda. The primary goal of this research was to assess and evaluate the depth of the aquifers and the location of the most appropriate drill sites for Boru Med groundwater potential. The VES curve was interpreted qualitatively but geo-electric sections were interpreted quantitatively. Likewise, magnetic data quantitative interpretation was carried out using a 3D Euler deconvolution magnetic map, and plots of two-dimensional magnetic profiles. Using Win Resist and Resix-Ip modeling software to model the VES data, and by producing geo-electric sections along selected survey lines using the findings of various VES point interpretations and lithological information from a different borehole.
