Nature Based Climate Change Adaptation Measures for Sustainable Crops Production in Ethiopia: Review

Authors: Hana Tamrat Gebirehiwot and Edom Kibkab

Abstract: Ethiopian crop production system is tremendously exposed to climate change impacts. Climate change, the higher increase in growing season temperatures combined with high inter-annual and intra-seasonal variability of rainfall, is threatening the yield of agricultural crops like maize, teff, wheat, barley, fava bean, and sorghum in Ethiopia. This is because climate change leads to shortening of the maturity period, drought, diseases and pests, and dwindling of soil fertility.

Water Availability and Row Spacing Effects on Nitrogen Use Efficiency in No-Till Maize

Authors: Barbieri PA, Echeverria HE and Sainz Rozas HR

Abstract: Reduced row spacing has shown to increase nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) in no-till irrigated maize; however available information in rainfed conditions is scarce. The objective was to analyze row spacing effects on NUE under different water and nitrogen (N) regimes. Maize crops were grown at Balcarce, Argentina, during two seasons.

Performance of Rhizobial Inoculants on Yield and Yield Components of Faba Bean in Southern Ethiopia

Authors: Paulos Ketema Kebede and Tarekegn Tefera Lele

Abstract: Biological fixation of atmospheric nitrogen by legumes is a known way to recycle nitrogen into a plant-available form. The efficiency of nitrogen fixation depends on the legume genotype and requires a host-specific rhizobia strain for nodule formation and yield enhancement. Therefore, the field experiment was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of rhizobial inoculants on yield and yield components of faba bean under rainy conditions during two consecutive main

The Effect of Silicon on Salinity Toxicity in Tomatoes Plants: The Role of Antioxidants in Alleviating Oxidative Stress Caused by Salt Conditions

Authors: Giannakoula A, Daskas G and Ouzounidou G

Abstract: Salinity stress is a major environmental factor which adversely affects plant growth and development. Silicon (Si) is an abundant element which, when supplied to plants, increases tolerance to abiotic stresses, such as salinity and drought stress. This study aimed to investigate the roles of silicon (Si) in the amelioration of salinity in two tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill) cultivated varieties cv bacioty, a cherry type cultivar, and cv. de barao chornyy, a blach cherry type

The Protective Role of Melatonin in Alleviation of Copper Toxicity of a Greek Grapevine (Vitis Vinifera L.) Variety

Authors: Anastasia Giannakoula and Stamatis Aggelopoulos

Abstract: Grapevine is a major fruit crop with high economic importance, especially in the Mediterranean region. During the last few decades, increased heavy metal contamination has become one of the most important abiotic stress affecting grapevine production. Melatonin is a plant hormone that plays an important role related to antioxidant activity and also enhances plant growth and abiotic stress tolerance. Another role of melatonin is as a biostimulator and alleviator
