Abstract: Vitamin D deficiency has been associated with a range of neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders, including schizophrenia, autism, depression, Alzheimer’s disease and cognitive impairment. The active form of vitamin D, 1,25(OH)2D3, is a neurosteroid that has a wide range of functions within the adult brain including calcium maintenance, regulation of neurotrophic factors, neurotransmission, and neuroprotection.
